Welcoming Message from Minister of Environment, Republic of Indonesia
To All Participants of the AsiaFlux Conference 2025
Distinguished guests – esteemed scientists, students, practitioners, and partners from across the globe.
It is a great pleasure that I welcome all of you to the AsiaFlux Conference 2025 in Pangkalan Kerinci, Riau. Riau stands proudly as the host of AsiaFlux, as the traditions deeply rooted in the hearts of the Riau people have now become a cultural spirit that greets the eyes of the world, beating as the heart and soul of culture in every corner of the Land of Lancang Kuning. This forum is a vital forum for advancing ecosystem flux research, fostering collaboration, and renewing our commitment to the role of peatlands in climate regulation, biodiversity, and sustainable development. Your participation reflects our shared dedication to understanding carbon, water, and energy exchanges within diverse ecosystems and to strengthening cooperation for effective climate action.
Indonesia, with its vast and varied landscapes – from tropical rainforests and dynamic peatlands to vibrant coastal ecosystems – is a living laboratory for flux studies. We proud to share that through restoration, rewetting, community engagement and science-based policies, we have achieved significant progress – which is more than 4,15 million hectares of peatland has restored (10 years period, 2016-2025), reducing of forest fires more than 1,43 million hectares in 2025 with emission reduced by more than 605-million-ton CO2-eq (96 %) compared to 2019. These achievements demonstrate that with strong partnerships, prevention and restoration efforts can succeed.
I invite scientists, students, practitioners and partners from across the globe to join us in Riau, to enrich dialogue, share innovations, and strengthen our network to sustainable peatland ecosystems and a resilient future for all. We believe that by bringing together experts from across Asia and beyond, AsiaFlux 2025 will catalyse new discoveries, forge stronger networks, and inspire actionable solutions for a sustainable future.
Thank you, and we wish you a highly productive and successful AsiaFlux Conference 2025.
