Welcoming Message from Minister of Forestry, Republic of Indonesia
To All Participants of the AsiaFlux Conference 2025
Distinguished guests – esteemed scientists, students, practitioners, and partners from across the globe.
It is my great honor and pleasure to welcome you all to the AsiaFlux Conference 2025 in Pangkalan Kerinci, Riau. Hosting this important scientific forum in Riau is truly meaningful, as this land is not only rich in culture and traditions but also represents one of Indonesia’s most dynamic forest landscapes, where peatlands, tropical forests, and diverse ecosystems meet.
Indonesia is home to one of the largest tropical forest areas in the world, covering more than 125.8 million hectares, or about 63% of our land area. These forests, ranging from lowland rainforests and vast peatlands to mangroves and montane ecosystems, serve as a cornerstone for global biodiversity, climate stability, water regulation, and community livelihoods. The immense potential of our forests also lies in their role as a carbon sink, a provider of ecosystem services, and a source of sustainable forest-based products that support national and global sustainable development.
The Ministry of Forestry has been implementing various strategic programs to ensure forest sustainability. Among them are forest and land rehabilitation, social forestry for community empowerment, forest fire prevention and peatland restoration, and the promotion of forest product down-streaming to enhance added value for local and global markets. These programs are not only aligned with our national development agenda but also contribute significantly to global climate action and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.
In this context, AsiaFlux plays a vital role as a scientific platform that advances our understanding of carbon, water, and energy fluxes across ecosystems. Your participation here reflects a shared commitment to generating knowledge, building collaboration, and finding solutions to the urgent challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss.
I invite all scientists, students, practitioners, and partners to engage actively in this conference – to share innovations, strengthen networks, and co-create pathways towards resilient and sustainable ecosystems. I believe that AsiaFlux 2025 will catalyze new scientific breakthroughs, foster stronger partnerships, and inspire impactful action for the benefit of people and nature.
Thank you, and I wish you a fruitful and successful AsiaFlux Conference 2025.
Sincerely,
Minister of Forestry, Republic of Indonesia
